The North Somerset Council has allowed a number of verges and areas to "rewild" which basically just means leaving them and not mowing them all summer. The most cynical of residents see it as, at best, a thinly veiled cost cutting measure, and at worst an unkempt eyesore which is causing lack of visibility for pedestrians and motorists alike.

I'm not sure what I think about the version of rewilding we've seen here, when compared to, for example some of the beautiful and award winning "rewilded" verges I've seen in various other council areas which, it turns out, might be beautiful but actually aren't native to the UK and also don't support the diversity of invertebrate life that native wildflower meadows do. It doesn't seem like there is an easy answer, really, but interestingly, here in Portishead with two Salt Marsh areas (one of which was destroyed in Victorian times when they dumped loads of sand to try and make a beach), one of the most important rewilding things we could actually do to rewind that destruction is regrow Sea Grass. Sea Grass is amazing - a natural sink for Carbon Dioxide and contributing to our area's clean air and reducing carbon in the atmosphere.

Anyway, I've been thinking about the words Rewind and Rewild which have inspired this new print. It's available as a tote bag, and on a women's relaxed fit T-shirt.

You can see the bag here and t-shirt here, and if you like to listen rather than read, find out more about Sea Grass and Salt marshes in this excellent podcast!

https://images.podos.io/zbpkwjuogaaszwvdpzchs5sbqkdyfvflnz5r89cukhiupint.jpeg?z=1.6&fx=0.49072966507177&fy=0.60575548853061
https://images.podos.io/zbpkwjuogaaszwvdpzchs5sbqkdyfvflnz5r89cukhiupint.jpeg.jpg?w=1140&h=855&z=1.6&fx=0.49072966507177&fy=0.60575548853061
https://images.podos.io/zbpkwjuogaaszwvdpzchs5sbqkdyfvflnz5r89cukhiupint.jpeg.jpg?w=1920&h=1440&z=1.6&fx=0.49072966507177&fy=0.60575548853061
Rewild/Rewind | Rewilding North Somerset
Rewild and Rewind.
